Dove The Mozart Effect by Don Campbell. 1997. Avon Books, N.Y., N.Y.

The psyche is an important part of every person. Whether we are aware of it or not, music has a powerful effect on each of us. Students who sing or play an instrument score up to 51 points higher on SATs than the national average.

The Director of a Baltimore hospital's coronary care unit says that half an hour of classical music has the same effect as ten milligrams of Valium. Campbell lists fifty common conditions, including migraines, high blood pressure, and substance abuse, for which music can be used as a treatment or even a cure.

In Brittany, monks play music to animals and have found that cows who listen to Mozart produce more milk. In Washington State, Immigration Department officials play Mozart and Baroque music during English classes for new arrivals from Cambodia, Laos, etc., and report that it speeds up the learning process. Mozart's music has unique properties that Beethoven, Bach, and rock music do not have. No matter where you are born in the world, Mozart achieves the best effects in wholesome living.

Karl Barth is one of a few of the century's great theologians. His passion was for the music of Mozart. During Adolph Hitler's regime, the Nazis played harsh military music. That was done for a purpose: to stir the psyche into a frenzy of hate.

Try an experiment. Play a tape of hard rock music while you are driving. After a few minutes, play some of Mozart's concertos and observe what effect the differences in the effect each type of music has on you.

Another experiment is to play an hour of harsh music and have your blood pressure taken, and then repeat the process with Mozart. The psyche effects your whole body. The Body, the Psyche, the Brain, and the Spirit are all one. In other words, music effects your SOUL.

Don Campbell trained as a classical musician with Nadia Boulanger in France. He founded the Institute of Music, Health and Education in 1988. He is a native Texan who lives in Boulder, Colorado.
